The largest Ukrainian mobile operators began blocking "VKontakte", "Classmates" and services of "Yandex"

Large cellular operators Kyivstar, Vodafone and Lifecell began blocking social networks VKontakte, Odnoklassniki, search, maps and other Yandex services on the territory of Ukraine. This is reported by the local newspaper Ain.

"By fulfilling the requirements of the decree [of the President of Ukraine], telecom operators are now beginning technical measures to limit the provision of access to these websites according to technical capabilities," the message says.

Operators block both mobile and desktop versions of sites. While the lock does not work for all users, but Twitter shows screenshots confirming that the ban on services takes effect.

On May 16, the President of Ukraine signed a decree that introduces new sanctions against Russian companies. According to the text of the document published on the website of the head of state, restrictions are imposed against 1228 people and 468 firms. Among those who fell under the sanctions, the largest Russian social networks VKontakte and Odnoklassniki appear, in particular.

The decree separately obliges Ukrainian Internet providers and telecom operators to block access to "Odnoklassnikam", "VKontakte", as well as to the services of Mail.Ru Group and "Yandex".

The day before, the administration of VKontakte and Odnoklassniki sent messages to Ukrainian users of social networks with instructions for circumventing locks. In "VKontakte" already said that for a day on May 16, the social network was visited by 18 million users from Ukraine - more than on any other day in the history of the site.
