Japan intends to dump radioactive water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the ocean
Japanese Minister of Environmental Protection Yoshiaki Harada said that some of the radioactive water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant may have to be dumped into the ocean. The company Tepco, which runs this plant, has already collected about 1 million tons of water used to cool the nuclear reactor after the station was hit by an earthquake and tsunami in 2011. However, according to the minister, by 2022 the company will run out of space for tanks used to store water.
Currently, radioactive water is stored in about 1 thousand special tanks located near the nuclear power plant. Mr. Harada said that the issue is so serious that it will be brought up for discussion by the entire government of the country. In turn, the cabinet secretary general, Yoshihide Suga, said at a press conference that Mr. Harada’s option of dumping radioactive water into the ocean was “his personal opinion only”. It is reported that the government is currently awaiting an expert report on the situation and will make a final decision based on its results.
Recall that the accident at the Fukushima-1 NPP occurred after the earthquake in Japan on March 11 and the tsunami that followed. As a result of natural disasters, about 16 thousand people died. Hundreds of thousands of Japanese were forced to leave their homes.
