China wants to build a space shuttle with an atomic engine
The new report published by the Chinese Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), dedicated to the space program of China, contains many ambitious tasks that the Corporation sets for itself for the next 20 years. About some of them told Engadget.
First of all, CASC plans to expand the Changzheng family of carrier rockets. The series has existed since 1970 and is regularly updated and modernized. So, the next stage of modifications is planned for 2020 - then it is planned to finish work on the Changzheng 8 missile. The main advantage of the novelty will be a small price, which will allow China to offer commercial launch services. Since 2025, when the work on the reusable spacecraft is completed, the Changzheng 8 rockets can become a carrier for it. The ship is planned to be used also for space tourism.
The next launch vehicle "Chengzheng 9" will be put into operation no earlier than 2030 and, unlike the inexpensive "eight", will be quite heavy, but it will be able to put into orbit up to 100 tons of cargo. Now all the Chinese carrier rockets are disposable, but by 2035 the whole series of "Chengzheng" is going to be reusable. This will make it possible to carry out a wide range of tasks, including interplanetary flights, cargo delivery to orbit, tourism, extraction of minerals, space construction and much more.
In addition, until 2040, CASC is going to develop a space shuttle with an atomic engine. The document modestly hides the details of this project, but the idea itself is already very intriguing. More likely.
