John Tefft called on the peoples of Russia and the United States to rally
US Ambassador to Russia John Tefft stated that the image of the action "Immortal Regiment" will forever remain for him the personification of the high price that the Soviet people had to pay to win the Second World War. He wrote about this in his blog in LiveJournal.
"Seeing how tens of thousands of Russians go under the gaze of so many departed heroes, you remember what kind of human losses the Second World War cost and what the Soviet people paid especially high price," the diplomat wrote.
According to Tefft, such acts of memory are so important because every year there are fewer participants in that war.
"We must also not forget what it was all for ... They fought for the idea of peace and freedom in the whole world - a world whose future is not decided at gunpoint but at polling stations; Not by dictators and their armies leading conquests, but by people who have the right to determine their own destiny, "the ambassador said.
Tefft called to follow the example of ordinary Americans and Russians who rallied for a just cause during the war.
"Undoubtedly, we can do the same thing today, following their example," added the diplomat.
May 9, 2017 marks the 72nd anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War.
